Note:
This painting has never been offered to the public. It is extraordinarily typical of the period, and one of the finest examples of this important subject that I have seen. It screams Picasso and it is incredibly elegant. The colors are magnificent. This oil is, without question, the finest painting at this price level available anywhere. We believe it is very undervalued.

From 1893-1895 Renoir rented a studio to the Chateau des Brouillards on the top of the Butte Montmartre. His son, Jean Renoir, writes:
"The whole period of my father's stay at the Chateau des Brouillards was prolific. Renoir told me himself, so if one remembers his usual enormous output, then one can imagine the prodigious amount of paintings he did at this period. The place inspired him."
(J. Renoir, My Father, London, 1962, p. 250)
|
With the Sacre-Coeur depicted in the background, two young girls converse in the foreground surrounded by lush, green foliage that fills the canvas. Barbara E. White writes:
"Tangible forms are surrounded by a warm atmosphere created by expressive brushstrokes of vibrant color and sparkling light. Classical feelings of weightiness and universality are blended with Impressionist feelings of movement and joyfulness."
(B.E. White, Renoir, His Life, Art and Letters, New York, 1984, p. 217)

This painting is not lined. There appears to be residue of an old varnish in minor areas.
Nothing appears to fluoresce under ultra-violet light.
